My Tried and True Makeup Tips

Ever since I could remember, I have always had a fascination with makeup. Whenever my parents would go out on date nights, I would watch my mom do her makeup at her vanity. I would usually end up taking her lipstick and putting it on myself (pictured below).  As soon as I turned twelve years old I got my first IPod Touch for Christmas. I instantly became obsessed with YouTube when I discovered the beauty community. My love for makeup grew through watching YouTube tutorials. First, by watching Blair and Elle Fowler, then discovering Michelle Phan's channel, Ingrid Nilsen, and many, many more. It became a hobby of mine and I would spend hours watching all kinds of makeup and beauty tutorials. I attended a Catholic grammar school so obviously makeup was a huge no, we weren't even allowed to wear nail polish. So, I would spend my weekends experimenting with my big sister's hand-me-down, play makeup. Whenever I got money from babysitting I would save up for a new makeup product. When I turned fourteen and started working at a boutique, I used my first real paycheck to buy the Naked 2 palette. From then on I really grew to love the art of makeup. My bank account was not grateful, but my heart was happy. Fashion has always been my number one passion in life, but makeup became the finishing touch to my outfits. After almost five years of wearing makeup, I have come to discover the major dos and don'ts. Here are a few:

Always Take Care of Your Skin First

Establish A Skincare Routine That Works For You

Yes, makeup is fun but it's the best when you have a clean, healthy base to work on. I am not saying completely acne free because trust me, we all get annoying pimples here and there but it is important to moisturize, and treat your skin well. And never forget... DO NOT EVER SLEEP IN YOUR MAKEUP. If you know you will be out late and most likely won't be up for washing your face before bed, throw a pack of makeup wipes on your nightstand. Sleeping in makeup is the ultimate betrayal to your skin.

Never Skip Moisturizer or Primer

I have found that makeup applies best when I prep my skin beforehand. Always moisturize your face prior to applying anything else to your skin. Next, I will usually grab a face primer to ensure that my makeup lasts all day. My favorite is Benefit Porefessional (pictured above). I have gone though so many tubes of this and have been using it for years.

Wash Your Makeup Brushes

Gross, grimy brushes leads to acne, clogged pores,  and just overall bad application of makeup. It is so important to wash your brushes either weekly or every two weeks (depending on how often you use them). I use the EcoTools makeup brush cleansing shampoo. It retails for around $8.00 and keeps my brushes fresh and clean!

Makeup Has Expiration Dates...Follow Them!

Some products tend to last awhile depending how much you use it. However, if you know you've had any sort of makeup product sitting in your vanity for quite some time, check the expiration date/number of months it is supposed to be used for. If it's expired, THROW IT OUT!

Skip Heavy Foundation..Less is More

Some people love the full coverage foundation look. However, definitely skip it when you can or dilute it with a dime-size amount of moisturizer to create a fresher, more natural approach. What I tend to do is spot conceal. I will usually just apply and blend concealer on any blemishes/red spots as well as under my eyes to cover my dark circles.

Covering a Zit

Zits freaking suck. My go to covering trick is to use a small, flat concealer brush. I dip my brush into a little concealer and pat a dot directly on top of my zit. Next, I use the brush to blend the edges of the dot of concealer out. After its blended in, I take a little powder to set it overtop. If I have a severe, cystic zit, before I conceal it, I will apply and blend out green concealer onto it to counteract the redness. Then, I'll proceed with my regular concealer. It's best to use a brush because you don't want to apply concealer to the zit directly with the applicator because then the bacteria from your zit will transfer onto the concealer applicator that goes back into the tube.
